Campylobacter coli in Organic and Conventional Pig Production in France and Sweden: Prevalence and Antimicrobial Resistance. Organic Eprints
Kempf, Isabelle; Kerouanton, Annaëlle; Bougeard, Stéphanie; Nagard, Bérengère; Rose, Valérie; Mourand, Gwénaëlle; Österberg, Julia; Bengtsson, Björn O..
The purpose of the study was to evaluate and compare the prevalence and antimicrobial resistance of Campylobacter coli in conventional and organic pigs from France and Sweden. Fecal or colon samples were collected at farms or at slaughterhouses and cultured for Campylobacter. The minimum inhibitory concentrations of ciprofloxacin, nalidixic acid, streptomycin, tetracycline, erythromycin, and gentamicin were determined by microdilution for a total of 263 French strains from 114 pigs from 50 different farms and 82 Swedish strains from 144 pigs from 54 different farms. Erythromycin resistant isolates were examined for presence of the emerging rRNA methylase erm(B) gene. The study showed that within the colon samples obtained in each country there was no...

Cheese liking and consumer willingness to pay as affected by information about organic production Organic Eprints
Napolitano, Fabio; Braghieri, Ada; Piasentier, Edi; Favotto, Saida; Naspetti, Simona; Zanoli, Raffaele.
The present study aimed to assess the effect of information about organic production on Pecorino cheese liking and consumer willingness to pay. Mean scores of perceived liking were similar for organic cheese (OC) and conventional cheese (CC). Expected liking scores were higher for OC than for CC (P<0.001). For OC the expected liking was significantly higher (P<0.001) than the perceived liking expressed in blind conditions (negative disconfirmation), whereas for CC the expected liking was significantly lower (P<0.001) than the perceived liking expressed in blind conditions (positive disconfirmation). Consumers assimilated their liking for OC in the direction of expectations, as the difference actual vs. perceived liking was significant...

Dilemma og synergi i økologisk husdyrhold: Dyrevelfærd, naturlighed og fødevaresikkerhed Organic Eprints
Vaarst, M..

Walkenhorst, Michael.

HUNGARIAN ON-FARM RESEARCH PROGRAM FOR VARROA CONTROL IN ORGANIC BEEKEEPING Organic Eprints
Csáki, Tamás; Drexler, Dora.
Varroatosis, as the current bane of the beekeepers, is causing the greatest economic damage in the apicultural sector. Varroa mites have a vector role, distributing viruses and weakening bees that then become more susceptible to other pathogens as well. Disorientation of bees, robbing, and frame exchanging can transport mites from one colony to another (Oliver, 2011). It is generally accepted that there are no colonies without mites in Hungary. Infection levels increase over time in colonies that are left untreated or not managed regularly. The infection level must be kept as low as possible for a sustainable production. Consistent control of varroatosis should be provided without harmful effects such as toxic residues persist in the hive products (honey,...

Mastitis ganzheitlich angehen Organic Eprints
Walkenhorst, Michael.

Possible Natural Toxins in Organic Livestock Farming Organic Eprints
Sekkin, Selim; Kum, Cavit.
Public concern about food quality has intensified in recent years. In the last decades, the amount of farmland managed under certified organic practices has expanded dramatically and it is expected to increase in the future. There is a growing demand for organic foods driven primarily by consumers’ perceptions of the quality and safety of these foods and to the positive environmental impact of organic agriculture practices. This growth in demand is expected to continue in the future. Obviously many factors in production systems have an impact on the health and welfare of the animals involved. Animals feed or forage may be the source of disorders for farm animals also could lead to human illness. The types of feeds administered do not differ significantly...

Presence of Salmonella and Campylobacter spp. in Wild Small Mammals on Organic Farms Organic Eprints
B. G., Meerburg; W. F., Jacobs-Reitsma.
The presence of Salmonella and Campylobacter spp. in rodents and insectivores (n 282) was investigated on organic farms. Infections were encountered in house mice (8 of 83 Campylobacter positive and 1 of 83 Salmonella sp. strain Livingstone positive) and brown rats (1 of 8 Campylobacter positive) but not in other species. No shared Campylobacter genotypes were found between rodent and pig manure isolates. Effective on-farm rodent management is recommended.

Survival of animal parasites and weed seeds as affected by anaerobic digestion at meso- and termophilic conditions Organic Eprints
Johansen, Anders; Carlsgart, Josefine; Hansen, Christian M.; Roepstorff, Allan; Andreasen, Christian; Nielsen, Henrik Bangsø.
Anaerobic digestion of residual materials from animals and crops offers an opportunity to simultaneously produce bioenergy and plant fertilizers at single farms and in farm communities where input substrate materials and resulting digested residues are shared among member farms. A surplus benefit from this praxis may be the suppressing of propagules from harmful biological pest like animal parasites, pathogens, and weed seeds. In the present work batch experiments were performed, where survival of six species of weeds and the pigs large roundworm Ascaris suum (non-embryonated eggs) was assessed under conditions similar to biogas plants managed at meso- (37 °C) and thermophilic (50 °C) conditions. Cattle manure was used as digestion substrate and...

Sustaining Animal Health and Food Safety in Organic Farming (SAFO) Organic Eprints
The organic farming sector has experienced a rapid growth over the past decades. The growth has raised the need to address food safety aspects in relation to animal health, the farm situation and the living conditions of animals. Furthermore, the EU-regulations need to be put into perspectives when food safety is considered. In principle, organic standards on livestock production must secure animal health and food safety, they must comply with common EU standards, they should allow farming systems in harmony with their geographic and cultural localities. They should also be the result of a productive discussion between researchers, policy makers, farmers and consumers. On this background, the objective of SAFO is to improve food safety and animal...
