The purpose of the study was to evaluate and compare the prevalence and antimicrobial resistance of Campylobacter coli in conventional and organic pigs from France and Sweden. Fecal or colon samples were collected at farms or at slaughterhouses and cultured for Campylobacter. The minimum inhibitory concentrations of ciprofloxacin, nalidixic acid, streptomycin, tetracycline, erythromycin, and gentamicin were determined by microdilution for a total of 263 French strains from 114 pigs from 50 different farms and 82 Swedish strains from 144 pigs from 54 different farms. Erythromycin resistant isolates were examined for presence of the emerging rRNA methylase erm(B) gene. The study showed that within the colon samples obtained in each country there was no... |

Sustaining Animal Health and Food Safety in Organic Farming (SAFO) is a European Commission funded project, with the objective to contribute to improved animal health and food safety in organic livestock production systems in existing and candidate member countries of the European Union. Workshops form a central part of the SAFO ctivities. This volume, with the contributions from the 3rd SAFO Workshop at the Institute of Grassland and Wetlands in Falenty, Poland in September 2004, is one in a series of five proceedings published during the lifetime of the project (2003-2006). Electronic versions of the proceedings are available at the SAFO web-site at ttp://www.safonetwork.org/ Animal health security, the role of zoonotic diseases and the risk of... |

Varroatosis, as the current bane of the beekeepers, is causing the greatest economic damage in the apicultural sector. Varroa mites have a vector role, distributing viruses and weakening bees that then become more susceptible to other pathogens as well. Disorientation of bees, robbing, and frame exchanging can transport mites from one colony to another (Oliver, 2011). It is generally accepted that there are no colonies without mites in Hungary. Infection levels increase over time in colonies that are left untreated or not managed regularly. The infection level must be kept as low as possible for a sustainable production. Consistent control of varroatosis should be provided without harmful effects such as toxic residues persist in the hive products (honey,... |

Public concern about food quality has intensified in recent years. In the last decades, the amount of farmland managed under certified organic practices has expanded dramatically and it is expected to increase in the future. There is a growing demand for organic foods driven primarily by consumers’ perceptions of the quality and safety of these foods and to the positive environmental impact of organic agriculture practices. This growth in demand is expected to continue in the future. Obviously many factors in production systems have an impact on the health and welfare of the animals involved. Animals feed or forage may be the source of disorders for farm animals also could lead to human illness. The types of feeds administered do not differ significantly... |

Anaerobic digestion of residual materials from animals and crops offers an opportunity to simultaneously produce bioenergy and plant fertilizers at single farms and in farm communities where input substrate materials and resulting digested residues are shared among member farms. A surplus benefit from this praxis may be the suppressing of propagules from harmful biological pests like weeds and animal pathogens (e.g. parasites). In the present work, batch experiments were performed, where survival of seed of seven species of weeds and non-embryonated eggs of the large roundworm of pigs, Ascaris suum, was assessed under conditions similar to biogas plants managed at meso- (37 °C) and thermophilic (55 °C) conditions. Cattle manure was used as digestion... |

The organic farming sector has experienced a rapid growth over the past decades. The growth has raised the need to address food safety aspects in relation to animal health, the farm situation and the living conditions of animals. Furthermore, the EU-regulations need to be put into perspectives when food safety is considered. In principle, organic standards on livestock production must secure animal health and food safety, they must comply with common EU standards, they should allow farming systems in harmony with their geographic and cultural localities. They should also be the result of a productive discussion between researchers, policy makers, farmers and consumers. On this background, the objective of SAFO is to improve food safety and animal... |
